Museum of Arts and Design

Holly Hotchner, one of the world’s foremost leaders in art conservation and museum management, currently serves as director of the Museum of Arts and Design in New York. She began her career as a collections cataloguer for the Museum of Modern Art, and then worked for the Tate Gallery in London, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the New York Historical Society before accepting her current role.

The Museum of Arts and Design explores how craft, art, and design intersect in the visual arts today by focusing on contemporary creativity and the ways in which artists and designers from around the world transform materials through processes ranging from handmade to cutting edge technologies. Its exhibition programme explores and illuminates issues and ideas, highlights creativity and craftsmanship, and celebrates the limitless potential of materials and techniques when used by creative and innovative artists.

Accredited with its dramatic transformation, Hotchner has recently implemented an eighty-five million dollar (capital) campaign to strengthen the Museum’s endowment and to support the development of its new home in Manhattan. The new building has more than triple the Museum’s current space and will provide dedicated galleries to its permanent collection of over 2,000 objects. She has also significantly expanded the collections of the Museum as well as public programming and educational outreach, with critically acclaimed exhibitions.

She is also the founder of Holly Hotchner Fine Arts Management, a firm that provides collections management, cataloguing, and conservation services to individuals and corporations, and the creation of the museum division of audio arts.

She is a member of the board of the New York Landmarks Conservancy and sits on the education committee at the Whitney Museum of American Art. Hotchner is a fellow of the American Institute of Conservation and the International Institute of Conservation.
