Hou Han-ru
Director of Exhibitions and Public Programs and Chair of Exhibition and Museum Studies

Hou Han-ru is well established as one of the world’s premier art and culture critics and curators. His main work has been focused on the dynamic relationship amongst art, architecture, urbanism and social change in the age of globalisation. Collaborating closely with professionals and various domains from the public, his curatorial and writing projects are highly experimental and seek to propose new understandings of the tension and interactions between globalism and locality as well as between history, present and future, in order to envision new conditions for cultural production.

At the San Francisco Art Institute, he has independently curated or co-curated numerous exhibitions including the recent ‘Too Early for Vacation, EV + A 2008’ (Ireland), and ‘Not Only Possible, But Also
Necessary – Optimism in The Age of Global Wars, The 10th Istanbul Biennial’(Istanbul).

Hou has lectured in numerous international institutions and served on international juries for art and architecture awards. Among his other roles he has also served as a Professor at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten (Netherlands) and at the HISK (Belgium). He was a member of the Asian Art Council at the Solomon Guggenheim Museum(New York), the International Committee of Istanbul Biennial at the Istanbul Culture Foundation (Turkey), and a member of the Yokohama Triennial committee for the Japan Foundation.

He was a member of the advisory committee of De Appel Foundation in Amsterdam and the global advisory committee of Walker Arts Center in Minneapolis. Hou is also French correspondent of Flash
Art International and guest editor for several magazines as well as a frequent contributor to exhibition catalogues, art and architecture magazines and books.

In 2002 his book On The Mid-Ground was published by Timezone 8 in Beijing and Hong Kong.
