ID：您是如何理解自然与不自然？
How do you comprehend the natural and unnatural?

倪阳：“自然”是客观的、自在的、无意的
“不自然”是主观的、受控的、有意的
应该还存在一种状态，介于自然与不自然之间，也许可称之为“或然”（in-between）

"Nature" is objective, uncontrolled, accidental
"Unnatural" is subjective, controlled, intentional
There is maybe another situation between the natural and the unnatural, perhaps which can be called "in-between".

ID： 大学教授与建筑师的角色有什么根本上的不同，而作为您自己更愿意作为哪种角色出现在公众面前？
What is the essential difference between the role of the university professor and the architect, which do you prefer?

倪阳：我的实际角色就是建筑师，只是偶尔给学生做些讲座。

I just give some lectures occasionally, as a matter of fact, I’m an architect.

ID：大家都知道您参与上海世博会中国馆的设计，但今天能否谈谈您的另外一个作品“侵华日军南京大屠杀遇难同胞纪念馆扩建工程”？
As is known to all that you are involved in the design of the China Pavilion in Shanghai Expo, would you mind talking about your another work " Memorial Hall expansion project of Japanese invaders in Nanjing Massacre "?

倪阳：这是一个国际竞标项目，当时用地周边环境噪杂——许多临建建筑杂乱无章，路上车水马龙。我在这个项目上预设了两个目标点：“肃静”、“序列”，通过暗喻城墙的围墙（5.4米高）组合分隔开内、外场地，使内部场地在材料和灰色调的映衬下显现出“内敛、肃杀”的场性。此外，空间序列也是这个项目的一大特征，总平面中原纪念馆仍然作为整体项目的高潮所在，在其东侧增加了“前奏”广场、二期纪念馆，而在其西侧设计了“尾声”和平公园，形成了极富节奏和张力的空间序列。极具城市尺度的二期纪念馆主体造型设计，是平坡式平面逻辑生成的结果；同时，其坡式屋面也很好地解决了任务书所提出的“万人广场”这个诉求。

This project is an international bid, the surroundings was in a state of chaos with many temporary buildings and heavy traffic. I presented two targets on this project: "silence" and "sequence". We exploit the wall, which implied the city wall of Nan Jing in the past time, to separate the inside space from outside, and makes the background restrained and peaceful with the gray stones. In addition, the space sequence is another great feature of the project, the first phase Memorial Hall remains the climax of the whole project, and we add the "prelude" Square and the second phase Memorial Hall in the east and the "Epilogue" peace park in the west, that makes the spatial sequence full of rhythm and tension. The façade of the second phase Memorial Hall is generated from the slope plan logically; simultaneously, the slope roof is a good solution to meet the area requirement of the ten-thousand-people’s square.

ID：能否谈谈您这次“不自然2”的创作方向？
Could you please talk about the creative direction of Un-natural II?

倪阳：这次我在石板上做了两个设计，一个是通过一种“不自然”的方式去完成或趋近一个“自然”的现象（石间1）；另一个正相反，生成的过程是一个“自然”的过程，而结果却是一个设计感极强的成果（石间2）。

I make two design on the flagstone this time, one is to approach the "natural" phenomenon (instone1) through a unnatural way; on the contrary, the other one, a strong figure of design, is generated in a "natural" process(instone2).
